I don't get this one. My eyes are drawn immediately to the area of the seat holder & a few chains, but there is nothing there. My eyes go up, looking for something and finally , almost out of reach and certainly out of focus is a face -- a pretty face, but blurred. To what purpose? I just don't get it.

for me, a lot of it's in the lighting and the colours it causes here. I think the sunshine which falls on Emily's face is really atmospheric - and I love the contrast between the darker, sharper part of the picture, the soft light on her face, and the blurred bright sunshine and colours in the background (ie. the bottom right-hand corner). in fact, my eyes are drawn first and foremost to her face; it's only on then looking around that I see the dark, sharp seat and chains - and that's sort of interesting, I think! in the end, I don't think a good portrait is about choosing a picture which shows a person's face in the clearest possible way - it's about atmosphere; about personality; about capturing a moment, and/or a certain expression in that face. I think Bill's done that here. I think the lighting's beautiful, and far from detracting from the portrait, makes it.

It's a perfect picture for a birthday girl. It has an innocent feel, and it looks like a snippet of a memory. To me, the photo seems like its from the 70s with all the happy sunshine on her face.

This picture is magical. :) It looks like its a still shot from a music video for a song about love.

The sun is shining on her! The sun makes her glow.

I completely agree with Iris' description of how the eye reacts to this photo, but I'm a big fan of how that reaction works in this photo. The first thing I focused on was the hand in the center of the photo grasping the chain, which elicits thoughts of power & domination. Then my goes up and finds a smiling, hazy, warm face -- now the thoughts are disoriented, confused -- what is going on here? Finally the eye goes back to the chain & follows it down, and the whole image comes together -- it's woman on a swing. What starts off as a jarring, disorienting image becomes this warm & peaceful photo. I love it -- not just a great picture, but a great journey too.

mmm. intellectualism.

Nope. You can't have that swing the birthday girl's got it. Or that's what I think looking up at her. Well, that and how cool she is. I am certain at that height/age I would have traded my sister in an instant too hang out with her.
